From the comprehension of the inescapable mechanism having started the First World War, until the geopolitical consequences of its outcome, while passing by the story of the terrible combats, the strategic, tactical, technological or social evolutions that have been induced, many are the themes likely to provide a good matter to enthralling researches, often crowned with a publication. Armies of professional historians or amateurs dedicated their life to that period.
If the History of the conflict can be studied via witnesses of the politicians and military chiefs in charge in that time (see the page "The celebs point of view") ") or can be reconstituted from the vision of the single fighters (see the page " Great names of the Literature", "Other witnesses to go further", ou "D'autres témoins pour aller plus loin"), a reference book is despite everything often necessary. Generic works on the conflict
Some authors, or some publishers did not hesitate to try the publishing of the totality of the years of the conflict. After-war nationalist works or international and neutral point of view, subjective thesis or historical objectivity, once again there is books for every taste.

Work telling the History of the conflict, but very original by its texts and its structure, "1914-1918, the Great Upheaval" (1996) moreover includes a superb iconography. It is really a beautiful book, impressed with a humanistic mind and pleasant to glance. We can say that its authors, Jay Winter and Blaine Baggett, made a real performance since they managed to write, for this period of the History on which so many books were written, 90 years after, a story viewed from a completely new angle, multicultural and centered more on the Man than on the events. |

Another work prefaced by Maurice Genevoix, cette "Encyclopédie Larousse de la Première Guerre Mondiale" ( "Larousse Encyclopaedia of the First World War") do not demerit the tradition of serious and quality of this famous publisher. Written in 1973 by a team of Historians coordinated by General J.E. Valluy, this work in 2 volumes is full of descriptions, maps, photographs, statistics, and quotations. The bibliographical section only deserves your visit. Its quite academic construction avoiding to be annoying, this work can be read from the beginning to the end or be used like a reference. You will quite easily find it among the books of occasions. |
