Historic and technical information
Denomination :     47 mm Cockerill Nordenfelt M1885 Origin :       ( Nordenfelt)             ( Cockerill )

Historic context :

In 1914 the troops of the Belgian Congo 'Public Force', with only 15000 men, were equipped with this small gun very light but quite obsolete and not powerful : each company of the units of the small force engaged soon on the banks of the Tanganyika Lake had two of them.

The 'Canon de 47 mm Cockerill-Nordenfelt M1885' was designed and built by the company Nordenfelt with the collaboration of the Belgian company Cockerill (from Liège). Few or no data have been found on that gun but its observation shows that, if the barrel was equipped with a modern interrupted screw breech mechanism designed for quick firing, the carriage design was really rudimentary, particularly with the elevation mechanism that seems far from the 1885 standards. The gun had no recoil recuperation system integrated.
