Historic and technical information
Denomination :     75 Schneider PD06 / PD06bis Origin :       ( Schneider)

Historic context :

The Schneider works located in Le Creusot in Burgundy started designing artillery ordnance as soon as the forbidding of war material exportation had been abolished by the French government in 1884. With the help of the engineer Gustave Canet, the company designed numerous very good guns that were sold in big quantities to many countries but France, this country preferring the use of reglementary weapons designed and manufactured in the state arsenals (and sometimes contracted anyway to Le Creusot plant...).

Within the best sellers was the 6th version of a modern 75 mm / 76.2 mm quick firing fieldguns family, present on the Schneider catalog with the denomination 'PD' (= Puissant, ligne de mire organisée pour la Division des opérations de pointage). This 'canon de campagne de 75 mm Schneider PD06' was equipped with the very good quick action Schneider-Canet breech, and a hydro-pneumatic recoil recuperation system that had nothing to envy to the one of the famous reglementary gun 75mm Mle 1897.

The 75mm PD06 gun was delivered to :

  • Serbia, that had in 1914 45 batteries of the PD06 (76.2 mm - called 75 M 1907) version and 40 batteries of the PD06bis (75 mm - called 75 M 1907A) version, that is a total of 380 guns that were almost entirely lost to the enemy during the epic and disastrous retreat of the Serb army in December 1915. Some of them had already been captured by Tirks in 1912 during one of the Balkans wars

  • Portugal (seemingly together with an early version 'PD') with 144 guns delivered, named 'Peça Schneider-Canet 7.5cm m/904-906'.
