Historic and technical information
Denomination :     8cm M 05/08 LFA Origin :       ( Arsenaux d'état)             ( Skoda )             ( Industrie privée Austro-Hongroise )

Historic context :

Interested by the creation of anti-aircraft weapons as most of the nations since the end of the XIXth century, it is not before 1913 that Austria-Hungary finally started serious work on it. However, when the war started in 1914, the only rare AA giuns available were either prototypes of various calibres or an adaptaion of the 8cm M05 fieldgun on a modified carriage adapted for high angles fire ('M14 8cm').

Although the armies were improvising more or less strange carriages to adapt the fireldguns to the AA missions, the Skoda works developed a AA new weapon ('M14/R 8cm') by converting the captured 76.2 mm M 1902 fieldguns on a pivot carriage inspired by the similar weapons built by the German Ehrardt and tested and bought by Austria. It is only in 1917 that the War Minister decided to request Skoda to create a AA gun on an evolution of the good pivot carriage of the M14/R 8cm, but equipped with the good Austrian barrel of the 8cm M5/8 in order to be less dependent on German deliveries or War loots.

120 units of this '8cm M 05/08 LFA (Luftfahrzeugabwehr-Kanone)' were ordered in September 1917, but only started to be delivered on the front from the spring of 1918.
