Historic and technical information
|
Denomination :
37mm Rosenberg M 1915R
|
Origin :
  (
Russie)

|
Historic context :
In 1915, a new type of Russian infantry gun was improvised on the basis of a 37 mm L/20 barrel of a Hotchkiss revolver gun, as for the preceeding 37mm Obuchov M1914 R infantry gun, by the Russian colonel M.F. Rosenberg.
This new infantrey gun '37 mm M 1915 R system Rosenberg' had a real rudimentary design : the barrel was receiving a very simple 1/4 turn opening breech block and two trunnions unusually located at its very front end, attaching it to a craddle rrsting on a heavy wooden base. The recoil movement of the trunnion was very partially absorbed by a series of donut shaped rubber buffers placed on a rod linking the base to a spade. A steel shield could be added either at the front or at the rear of the barrel, and a wheel train attached for transportation.
Several guns were captured by Finland during the 1918 independance war in 1918 and kept with the idea they would be useful as an anti-tank weapon. The winter war fights against USSr in 1939 soon proved this idea was false and all these Russian 37mm Obuchov and Rosenberg system were removed from service.
