Breech markings 'FRIED KRUPP - Nr374 - Essen 1878 (or 1875 ?)'. If the second gigure is the good one, this tube, equipped with a Wahrendorff breech, might the prototype one ?

Carriage markings 'FRIED KRUPP - Essen - Nr 886'. The wheel manoeuvering the elevation screw is another proof of the German manufacturing lot.

Historic and technical information
Denomination :     8cm M 1877 Origin :       ( Krupp)             ( Obuchov )             ( Russie )

Historic context :

In 1877 the Russian armies ordered 1850 field guns of different variants of the well known 9cm K 73 to the German manufacturer Krupp, that were delivered from 1878 to 1880 (1700 guns only - 935 standard 87mm ; 195 lightweight 87mm and 570 heavy 107mm). Then they continued the production of the same model (with some technological differences) in numerous quantities in the Russian plants of Obuchov (3191 guns), Perm (41 guns), Putilov (108 guns) and Alexandrovsky (36 guns).

This '34 lines - 8cm M1877 fieldgun' had a 34 lines caliber (87 mm - 1 line = 0.1 inch) It was conform with its time standards, with a Krupp type sliding block breech mechanism (replaced from 1893 by a Wahrendorff type rotating breech), and without any recoil recuperation system. The German production carriages can be recognized by the wheel maneuvering the elevation screw, whereas the Russian ones have a steel bar instead.

There were two versions of this weapon :

  • the standard version with a 24 calibre barrel,

  • a lightweight version with a barrel shortened to 18 calibres

These guns were used during the Russo-Japanese war, the world war one, and the Russian civil war , Numerous guns were captured by the Finnish soldiers during the Russian revolution and were used for a short time by this country despite their obsolescence.
