Historic and technical information
Denomination :     8.35cm M 17 K Origin :       ( Autriche-Hongrie)

Historic context :

One of the specificities of the warfare in the Alps was the use of concealed enemy artillery guns behind gun-ports, in caverns and in casemates. The 8 cm Schartendemontierkanone M.17 ('SchartenDemontierKanone' = 'embrasuser destructing gun'), sometimes called 8.35cm M17 was designed to destroy or dismantle such specific targets, by adapting a very long 8.35 cm L/60 barrel on the good carriage of the 10.4cm K15 gun.

With the prototype, only 6 or 7 pieces were produced. Interesting is that this gun was very efficient within a certain range interval : above and below it, the efficiency was decreasing fast.

The guns had special sights with very precise quarter(!!)-milliradian (6400 mrad = 360 degrees) to fight this concealed positions, which were often not larger than 2 m by 2 m. The effective rate of fire was a very low 3 to 5 shells per minutes, as the very very long barrel swung a lot after firing.
