Historic and technical information
Denomination :     6-in M 1905 Origin :       ( US Ordn. Dpt)

Historic context :

The 6 inches tube M1905 has been initially developped for coastal defence fortifications. However, the General Preshing knew that the US Expeditionary Forces in Europe would need a long range heavy gun, and sollicited the quick creation of such a gun.

Similarly to what happened in most of the other fighting countries in 1915, this naval gun was adapted to terrestrial fights by mounting it on an improvised carriage. Numerous US coastal fortifications were therefore disarmed, and the new '6 inches M1905 guns', whose range had been improved by increasing the propulsive charge capacity in the chamber, were sent to France.

Because of its weight, this gun had to be towed by mechanical means. It is the same excessive weight that induced the US expeditionary forces in Europe to never use this gun that stayed in depot, and prefer the wonderful and modern French 155 GPF.
